Polystyrene & the Planet – A Cleaner Choice Than You Might Think
We all want to make greener choices and when it comes to packaging and construction, Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is doing its part to tread lightly. By choosing EPS, you’re picking a material that’s safe, responsible, and fully compliant with all technical and environment standards. Better still, it’s easily recyclable at the end of its life.
The production process? Surprisingly environment-friendly. It mainly uses steam (yes, just steam!), and the water gets reused again and again. EPS contains no CFCs, HCFCs, HFCs, or fibres, and boasts a zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP). It’s non-toxic, non-irritant, and completely inert, making it kind to people and kinder to nature.
Thousands of tonnes of EPS are recycled each year in the UK alone. So when your project’s wrapped up, your polystyrene doesn’t need to go to waste, it gets another life.

What is Expanded Polystyrene (EPS)?
Expanded Polystyrene better known as EPS, is a clever little material with a big personality. It’s a lightweight, rigid foam packed with versatility, popping up in everything from product packaging to theatre props and building insulation.
Surprisingly, it all starts with crude oil. During the hydrocarbon separation process, only about 0.1% of the oil goes on to become polystyrene, so it’s a tiny slice doing a mighty job!
EPS is made from just three key ingredients:
Steam – The magical element that expands and fuses the beads together. Bonus: the water is reused throughout the process, keeping it eco-friendly and efficient
Styrene – Found naturally in strawberries and coffee (yep, you’ve met it before), and manufactured in the UK for over 60 years.
Pentane – A non-CFC blowing agent that gives the polystyrene beads their puffed-up, cellular structure.
Recycling Polystyrene
We’re proud to say that polystyrene is 100% recyclable and at Pabrico, we walk the talk by recycling every single scrap of our own polystyrene waste. Better yet, we invite all our customers to return any unused or used EPS they’ve purchased from us, so it stays far away from landfill and gets a brand-new purpose.
Here’s how the magic happens: all returned polystyrene is fed into our compactor, which crunches down large pieces into near-bead form and compresses them into solid briquettes. These are then sent off to a specialist recycling centre where, using a process with heat, the briquettes are melted down into clean, reusable beads.
Those tiny transformed beads go on to do big things, like becoming sturdy insulation for buildings or keeping contents cool inside smart, sustainable packaging.
It’s clever, clean, and a great way to keep materials in motion.

Shrinking Our Footprint, One Bright Idea at a Time
At Pabrico, we’re not just shaping polystyrene, we’re shaping a more sustainable future. Over the years, we’ve made some smart, planet-friendly upgrades to help reduce our carbon footprint and do our bit for the environment.
🌞 In 2011, we went solar, installing 51 PV panels on our building. These beauties generate over 7,000 kWh of clean, renewable energy every year. No pollution, no fuss just good, reliable sunshine powering our operations.
💡 By 2015, we’d switched every light fitting inside and out to energy-saving LEDs, cutting our electricity use by up to 90% compared to old-school bulbs. Brighter lights, lighter footprint.
⚡ Fast forward to 2022, and we added an EV fast charger for our electric company vehicle. Even better? It’s powered by our own solar energy, giving us a clean, closed-loop solution we’re pretty proud of.
We’re committed to finding new ways to reduce our environmental impact, year after year, watt by watt.
