1983 Lewes to Newhaven Raft Race
In 1983, we took part in a charity raft race along the River Ouse, from Lewes to Newhaven. The event was organized by the Hailsham Round Table and broadcast by the television network TVS, drawing crowds to the riverbanks for a day of spirited competition.
The rules were simple but challenging: each team had to construct a raft from non‑boat materials and navigate the river without sinking. Speed determined the winners, while sponsorships and sales raised funds for local charities across East Sussex.
Pabrico Panels entered with a raft built entirely from polystyrene, designed to carry up to six people. Construction took several weeks, with many components painstakingly hand‑sculpted and painted, but the team finished just in time. On race day, Thomsetts, our local transport company, helped deliver the raft to the starting line.
As the race began, spectators lined the embankments, cheering and playfully showering contestants with flour and eggs. Our raft absorbed a significant amount of water during the journey, nearly doubling its weight, yet it held firm. After 2 hours, 11 minutes, and 45 seconds, we crossed the finish line, earning not only respect for our perseverance but also the coveted “Best Dressed” accolade from the TVS judges.
