The Last Starfighter – Helmet Prop
When The Last Starfighter arrived in UK cinemas in December 1984, audiences were captivated by its tale of an expert video‑game player whisked away by an alien ranger to become a starfighter pilot. For the London premiere, Pabrico was given a commission that perfectly matched the film’s sense of spectacle: to create a one‑off helmet, nearly three times the size of the original, that would stand proudly on display.
This was the 1980s, long before CAD machines or digital modelling. Every curve and contour had to be shaped by hand. Blocks of high‑density material were carved and sanded with painstaking precision, while custom hot wires were fashioned to hollow out the centre. The brief required that the helmet could actually be worn, so visitors could lift it over their heads and pose for photographs.
Once the form was complete, the finishing touches brought it to life. The helmet was painted to match the film’s colours, and the Starfighter logo was carefully hand‑painted across its surface, giving it authenticity and presence.
On the night of the premiere, the oversized helmet was delivered to the London cinema. It became a centrepiece of the event, admired by a host of celebrities who attended, including Princess Margaret and Elton John. For Pabrico, it was a project that combined craftsmanship, imagination, and a touch of movie magic.
